How FMCSA Motus Will Expose MCS-150 Non-Compliance

Many trucking companies without MC numbers have operated for years without much pressure to update their MCS-150.

If you operate intrastate-only or haul exempt commodities, you may have never been flagged, but that is about to change.

FMCSA’s new Motus system will significantly increase visibility across all USDOT carriers. At the same time, FMCSA has identified May 14, 2026 as a key milestone for portal access preparation.

While this is not a compliance deadline, it will directly impact your ability to manage your registration moving forward.

What Is an MCS-150 Biennial Update?

An MCS-150 biennial update is a required filing with FMCSA that keeps your USDOT registration current.

It includes company contact information, fleet size and vehicle count, driver count, type of operation (interstate vs. intrastate), and cargo classifications.

All carriers with a USDOT number must file, including:

    • Interstate carriers with MC authority
    • Intrastate carriers
    • Carriers hauling exempt commodities
    • Private and for-hire carriers

There are no exceptions based on authority type, commodity type, or size of operation.

When Is It Required?

An MCS-150 update is required every two years, based on your USDOT number—even if your information hasn’t changed.

What Is FMCSA Motus?

Motus is FMCSA’s new registration platform designed to replace legacy systems and modernize how carrier data is managed.

Why Many Carriers Have Avoided MCS-150 Enforcement

Carriers without MC authority—especially intrastate and exempt commodity haulers—have historically faced limited enforcement visibility.

This has created a false assumption:

“If I’m not being flagged, I must be compliant.”

Motus will change that by eliminating system gaps that allowed non-compliance to go unnoticed.

All USDOT carriers will now exist in a more connected system, regardless of:

    • Interstate vs. intrastate
    • Exempt vs. non-exempt
    • MC authority status

Motus will make outdated records easier to identify, improve consistency checks, and increase visibility into inaccurate or stale data

Where May 14, 2026 Fits In

May 14 is not a compliance deadline, it is a preparation milestone for FMCSA portal access.

Without proper access:

    • You may not be able to file required updates
    • You may experience delays
    • You could lose operational control

Bottom line: If you cannot access your account, you cannot stay compliant.

What You Should Do Now

1. Secure Your Portal Access

    • Log in before May 14
    • Verify credentials and Company Official
    • Confirm Login.gov setup

2. Track MCS-150 for All Carriers

    • Do not exclude intrastate or exempt carriers
    • Track true biennial cycles

3. Build Internal Systems

    • Set automated reminders
    • Schedule regular reviews
    • Verify data accuracy

4. Maintain Control of Your Account

    • Ensure your company owns access
    • Define how third parties are granted access

Motus is not changing the rules, it’s removing the ability to ignore them.

The carriers who prepare now will stay in control.

Take action today:

    • Log into your FMCSA Portal
    • Verify your account
    • Confirm your MCS-150 status

If you cannot clearly confirm both access and compliance, that’s the gap Motus will expose.
