FMCSA Motus Registration Update (2026)

Motor carriers across the country are receiving emails about FMCSA Motus registration, and it’s creating confusion. Some carriers are trying to register or are getting errors. Others think they need to act immediately.

Here’s what’s actually happening, and what you should (and shouldn’t) be doing right now.

Why You’re Seeing FMCSA Motus Errors

If you’ve tried accessing the FMCSA Motus system and ran into issues, you’re not alone. The system is still in a limited rollout.

Right now, access is primarily restricted to insurance filers. BOC-3 process agents, and select service providers

Motor carriers are not fully onboarded yet, which is why registration errors are expected. For an official overview, you can review the FMCSA Motus system.

When Will FMCSA Motus Be Available to Carriers?

FMCSA Motus is expected to roll out to motor carriers during a future phase (expected in 2026).

While there is no confirmed date, carriers will eventually transition to Motus, and registration will move fully into the new system

Until then, continue using current systems like the FMCSA registration portal and the Unified Registration System (URS).

What Will Change When FMCSA Motus Goes Live

FMCSA Motus does not change compliance requirements, but it does change how you access, manage, and control your account.

Here’s what carriers should expect:

  1. Login.gov Identity Verification Will Be Required

To access Motus, carriers will need a verified Login.gov account. This includes identity verification, secure login credentials, and confirmed account ownership. This change is designed to reduce fraud and unauthorized filings.

  2. Initial Registration Must Be Completed by the Carrier

The first-time setup in Motus will require a verified company representative and direct identity confirmation. This step must be completed by the carrier, not a third party.

  3. Third-Party Access Will Still Be Available

After setup, carriers will still be able to grant role-based access and work with third-party administrators (TPAs). However, the carrier will maintain full control of the account.

  4. One Centralized FMCSA Dashboard

Motus will replace multiple systems with a single login, one dashboard, and real-time updates and validation.

What Carriers Should Do Right Now to Prepare

Even though FMCSA Motus registration is not required yet, preparation is critical.

  1. Verify Your FMCSA Portal Access

Make sure you can access your account through the FMCSA Portal. Confirm your login works, the correct company officer has access, and former employees no longer have access.

  2. Set Up Your Login.gov Account

Creating your Login.gov account now will prevent delays later. You can create and verify your account here: Login.gov

  3. Update Your MCS-150 and Company Information

Before transitioning to Motus, ensure your company information is accurate.

    You can:

Accurate data now will reduce issues during migration.

What FMCSA Motus Does NOT Change (Important for Carriers)

Motus is a system update, not a regulatory change. Your existing requirements remain in place, including:

Nothing about compliance, filings, or safety regulations is changing.

Why FMCSA Motus Matters for Your Business

Motus is not about new rules. It’s about control and access to your FMCSA account.

If your account is unverified, incorrect, or inaccessible, you may face filing delays, authority issues, and insurance complications.

FMCSA Motus Registration: Bottom Line

Right now:

  • You do not need to register
  • Errors are expected
  • The system is still in limited access

Carriers who prepare early will avoid delays. FMCSA Motus is coming, but it is not fully live yet. This transition is about ensuring you control your company’s registration and identity. Prepare early. Verify access. Stay ahead.
