Is Your ELD IFTA Compliant?

Before you answer ‘yes’, let me provide you with some information on ELDs.

When purchasing from an ELD provider, they will typically offer you both ELD software and GPS tracking options. GPS tracking is not compliant with IFTA. While all ELDs have a GPS to track state lines, the miles that you are to report in your IFTA quarterly filings should be taken off of the odometer, not from the GPS.

Simply put - if you don’t have to plug your “ELD”/GPS into your ECM, it is not IFTA compliant.

IFTA Compliant ELD Requirements
When choosing an IFTA compliant ELD, there is particular data that your ELD most provide to be IFTA compliant:

  • Dates of Trip
  • Trip Origin and destination
  • Routes of travel including highway numbers (must have minimum of location “ping” every 15 minutes).
  • Total distance traveled with each jurisdiction
  • Total Trip distance
  • Unit number or vehicle identification number for power units and trailers
  • Beginning and ending odometer reading
  • Registrant’s name
  • Driver’s identification (name, number, signature)

IFTA Compliant ELD Recommendations
When asked which IFTA compliant ELD that we would recommend, we always refer carriers to Samsara. While purchasing a Samsara might involve upfront costs and long-term commitments, if you buy it through Aladdin, we will take care of any down payment and long-term commitment for you!

Another excellent option we suggest is Motive. While it may not be as user-friendly as Samsara, it is IFTA compliant.

Avoid IFTA Audits Today
ELDs can be highly beneficial, but only if they are IFTA compliant. IFTA non-compliance can result in fines upwards of $10,000 and make you prone to IFTA audits or license revocations.
