FMCSA Motus Registration Update (2026)

Motor carriers across the country are receiving emails about FMCSA Motus registration, and it’s creating confusion. Some carriers are trying to register or are getting errors. Others think they need to act immediately.

Here’s what’s actually happening, and what you should (and shouldn’t) be doing right now.

 

Why You’re Seeing FMCSA Motus Errors

If you’ve tried accessing the FMCSA Motus system and ran into issues, you’re not alone. The system is still in a limited rollout.

When Will FMCSA Motus Be Available to Carriers?

FMCSA Motus is expected to roll out to motor carriers during a future phase (expected in 2026).

While there is no confirmed date, carriers will eventually transition to Motus, and registration will move fully into the new system

Until then, continue using current systems like the FMCSA registration portal and the Unified Registration System (URS).

 

What Will Change When FMCSA Motus Goes Live

FMCSA Motus does not change compliance requirements, but it does change how you access, manage, and control your account.

Here’s what carriers should expect:

  1. Login.gov Identity Verification Will Be Required

    To access Motus, carriers will need a verified Login.gov account. This includes identity verification, secure login credentials, and confirmed account ownership. This change is designed to reduce fraud and unauthorized filings.

  2. Initial Registration Must Be Completed by the Carrier

    The first-time setup in Motus will require a verified company representative and direct identity confirmation. This step must be completed by the carrier, not a third party.

  3. Third-Party Access Will Still Be Available

    After setup, carriers will still be able to grant role-based access and work with third-party administrators (TPAs). However, the carrier will maintain full control of the account.

  4. One Centralized FMCSA Dashboard

    Motus will replace multiple systems with a single login, one dashboard, and real-time updates and validation.

 

What Carriers Should Do Right Now to Prepare

Even though FMCSA Motus registration is not required yet, preparation is critical.

  1. Verify Your FMCSA Portal Access

    Make sure you can access your account through the FMCSA Portal. Confirm your login works, the correct company officer has access, and former employees no longer have access.

  2. Set Up Your Login.gov Account
